Air-gapped backup relies on complete physical isolation from the network. Specifically, NimbusBackup keeps 2 disks disconnected from the server and stored offline at all times, with a guaranteed monthly rotation: at any given time you hold 2 months of offline backups (M-1 and M-2). Ransomware or an attacker simply cannot reach a medium that is not connected to any network. This is the most effective method against cyberattacks targeting backups. ANSSI, for its part, calls an offline backup indispensable (recommendation R12 of its backup guide), and the NIS2 directive mandates backup management as part of business continuity (art. 21 § 2 c).

Yes, data is hosted in our own Equinix Paris racks (AS206014) or on servers rented from major French or European hosting companies (such as OVH). No transfers outside the EU by default. Client-side AES-256 encryption is available: you enable it in Proxmox VE, and your data is then encrypted before it leaves your infrastructure, with a key only you hold. We recommend it. An immutable backup is a copy that ransomware cannot modify or encrypt, and that the backup account cannot delete. With NimbusBackup, immutability relies on role separation in Proxmox Backup Server: the backup account writes data without being able to delete it (an RBAC mechanism recognized by France's ANSSI), and PBS never modifies a snapshot once written. Deduplication is a native Proxmox Backup Server technology that detects identical data blocks between multiple backups and stores them only once. In practice, only modified blocks are transferred with each backup (block-level incremental). The gain depends on your data: on our MariaDB bench, 97.82% of a dump's data was already present 24 h after the previous one (30/09/2026). Every backup remains a complete restore point.

LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is a magnetic tape format designed for long-term archiving. An LTO-9 cartridge stores up to 18 TB and manufacturers state up to 30 years of archival life. Unlike hard drives, tapes are not subject to continuous mechanical wear or electronic failures. With NimbusBackup, LTO archiving complements disk backups to provide a third level of offline protection, ideal for regulatory compliance and long-term retention.

RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum amount of data you accept to lose: an RPO of 24h means your last backup is at most 24h old. RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum time to restore and bring your VMs back online. With NimbusBackup, RPO depends on your backup frequency (up to hourly). RTO depends on your volume and your bandwidth: on disk plans the data is online and the direct PBS restore starts immediately.
