Everything you need to know about Magnetic PBS
Magnetic PBS combines Proxmox backup on mechanical disk with automatic LTO tape archival. Your data benefits from dual protection: mechanical disk + long-term magnetic tape.
LTO tapes offer media that is unmounted, hence offline, between writes, and optimized storage costs. Each tape runs on a 3-month cycle (the month M tape is reused at M+3); longer retention is available on quote. Tapes stay in the tape library, whose robot can load them on demand; for tapes stored in the vault, out of the robot's reach, choose AirGapped LTO PBS.
LTO tape archival is performed automatically within 48 hours after the disk backup.
Magnetic PBS costs 89EUR excl. tax/TB/month, including HDD storage and automatic LTO tape archival.
By default, we deliver the account without delete permission: it can back up and restore, but cannot erase anything. An attacker or ransomware that takes over your Proxmox VE or servers therefore cannot delete the backups already sent, which limits the impact of a breach on your side. Limits: deletion remains possible if you asked for a datastore administrator account, if we ourselves are breached, or through a security flaw in PBS. The dual disk + LTO tape protection and PBS snapshots let you restore a snapshot taken before the attack. Unmounted tapes are offline, but they stay in the library, whose robot can load them on demand: this is not an out-of-reach copy. For that, AirGapped LTO PBS stores the tapes in the vault. Client-side AES-256 encryption adds an additional layer of protection.

Client-side encryption is not on by default, you decide — and we always recommend it. Once enabled, your backups are encrypted with AES-256 by proxmox-backup-client before they leave your infrastructure, with a key that stays with you. The option is set in Proxmox VE (Encryption tab of the PBS storage). Only you then hold the encryption key. Keep that key outside the infrastructure you back up: without it, nobody can restore.
